Shadow Minister promises funding for ALGWA

The Australian Local Government Women’s Association is delighted the Federal Labour opposition has promised $2 million over four years to increase the number of women in local government.

The Hon Julie Collins, Shadow Minister for Regional Development and Local Government promised $500,000 per year for four years for mentoring and scholarships, and committed to working with the ALGWA.

“We are delighted that the Shadow Minister has demonstrated a real commitment to increase the number of women in local government both as elected and professional staff,” said ALGWA President Cr Coral Ross

“Currently under one-third of councillors are women and less than one in ten local government CEOs are women. This funding will help redress the lack of equity,” added Cr Ross.

The Shadow Minister made the commitment at the National General Assembly of Local Government.

“We are greatly encouraged by this pledge and look forward to working with the Shadow Minister should the opposition be successful on July 2.

“We hope the Government matches this commitment,” said Cr Ross.
