Congratulations!

The NSW Local Government Minister Don Page has announced the 2012 winners of the NSW Women in Local Government Awards.  Congratulations to ALGWA National President Cr Darriea Turley, NSW Branch Country Vice President Cr Colleen Fuller and NSW Branch secretary Cr Vicki Scott, who were among the winners announced on 8th March, International Women's Day.

ALGWA 60 Years Celebration

A very successful celebratory dinner was held at Old Parliament House Canberra on Sunday 19th June 2011, with Governor General Quentin Bryce welcoming more than 240 participants to the historic venue.  The event was attended by many current Councillors and Mayors, representatives from the various State Branches, and of course the National Board.  The Governor General spoke warmly of the great achievements of ALGWA and the importance of women in representative roles in all levels of government.  The full speech, which was quite delightful can be viewed at this URL:  http://www.gg.gov.au/speech.php/view/id/934

The Victorian Branch Newsletter of August 2011 has a selection of photographs that were taken on the evening.  The Newsletter can be viewed on their website. The New South Wales Branch has a further collection of photographs on the 'Photographic Gallery' section of their website.

National Board Meeting

The National Board met in November 2011 at the historic Hawthorn Town Hall, in Melbourne's east.  We thank Cr. Coral Ross, the Victorian Delegate and a local Councillor, for arranging the venue and refreshments.  Each Branch presented a Report of happenings in their area over the past year, and these can be viewed here:

As well as strategic planning, the Annual General Meeting was held, and the draft Minutes can be perused if you click here.  After the formalities, the Board were joined for dinner in a local restaurant, by members of the Victorian executive, and were pleased to hear a brief report from Sandra Stoddart,   executive officer of the National Rural Women's Coalition and Network.

The Australian Honours Awards were announced recently, and once again women are in a minority of those honoured for their contribution to Australian life.  One of the reasons for this is the lack of nominations of women.  A new booklet gives details of how to nominate, and advice on how to maximize the chance of your nomination being a successful one.  Click here for a free download of the booklet.

Gender Equity Program Launch

In 2010 the then Honourable Tanya Plibersek, the Minister for the Status of Women and the Honourable Maxine McKew, Parliamentary Secretary for Infrasructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government launched ALGWA's 50:50 Vision - Councils for Gender Equity program at the Australian Council of Local Governments' dinner held at Parliament House. The program was designed to be accessed by all councils regardless of their size, location and progress on gender equity. Councils are able to apply for accreditation across three levels - bronze, silver and gold, and must move through these levels sequentially. The accreditation and identification of councils as 50:50 Vision employers of choice will make it easier for councils to attract and keep strong female candidates and officers.

Silver Award
The 50:50 Vision Silver Awards are now open, and the first Silver Award has been given to the City of Unley in South Australia.

Bronze Award
Applications are now open for the first level of accreditation in the 50:50 Vision Councils for Gender Equity Program Bronze Awards. In order to achieve a Bronze Award a Council must:

- Provide a Council endorsed statement of commitment to address gender equity issues;

- Conduct a self assessment of staff and elected representative gender ratios;
- Outline at least one project they will undertake to address gender equity issues; and
- Nominate a 50:50 Vision champion to carry the program within the organisation

The launch of the 50:50 Vision also inaugurated a dedicated website www.5050vision.com.au which includes detailed information about the initiative together with details on how councils can apply for the Awards.
